NON-COMMERCIAL DRIVER LICENSE TYPES

Non-commercial driver's license are divided into various categories to suit different driving needs. Before applying, it's crucial to identify the specific type of license you require. We've provided a detailed breakdown of license classes, and restrictions to assist you in selecting the correct license for you.

The class of license you need is generally determined by the design and size of the vehicle you intend to drive. We have outlined the various license classes below to guide you in choosing the appropriate one based on your vehicle's specifications,  these and all license classes are defined in 2AAC 90.210.

Classes of Non-Commercial Driver's Licenses

D IP Passenger Vehicles and Trucks a motor vehicle, motor-driven cycle, autocycle, all-terrain vehicle (ATV), snowmachine, all-purpose vehicle, or a combination of a motor vehicle and one or more other vehicles that is not a commercial motor vehicle or a motor vehicle for which a Class M1 or M3 license is required
M1 IM or M2 Two Wheeled Motorcycles motorcycles, motor-driven cycles, and motorized bicycles with 50 cc or more engine displacement, singly or in combination with trailers or sidecars designed to be used with these vehicles
M2 IM Small Motorcycles  motor-driven cycles and motorized bicycles with less than 50 cc engine displacement. Acts as instruction permit for Class M1 (only available for individuals at least 14 but no older than 15.)
M3 IM  or M2 Three-Wheeled Motorcycle  three-wheeled motorcycles, three-wheeled motor-driven cycles, and three-wheeled motorized bicycles with 50 cc or more engine displacement, singly or in combination with a trailer designed to be used with these vehicles. Acts as a permit  for Class M1 vehicles. 
 R IP Snowmobile/Snowmachine & All Terrain Vehicle(ATV)  May only operate snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles (ATV) designed for off highway use but allowed to operate on public roads by communities through an ordinance conforming with AS 28.01.010(a); may not be issued to and individual that holds a Class D license.

A restriction on a Non-commercial driver's license restricts the driver from operating specific types of vehicles.

License Restrictions: Restrictions may be placed on an individual's license based on disclosures made during an application for a license, medical evaluations or driving history. Restrictions that apply to an ID card must be self imposed, ordered by court or parole board. 

Restrictions for Non-Commercial Driver's Licenses

1 Corrective Lenses Corrective lenses (contacts or glasses) are required when operating a motor vehicle.

When corrective lenses (glasses or contacts) are used to meet the minimum vision standard without an physician or optometrist exam. vision standards without an exam are at least 20/40 in one or both eyes together. Or after a medical evaluation determines corrective lenses are necessary for safe operation. (2AAC 90.440 (f))

2 Outside Rearview Mirrors Two outside rearview mirrors are required to be installed on the vehicle operated.

When eyesight is considered "monocular". Meaning the applicant cannot read the vision testing device at 20/100 with one or both eyes.

Also used for individuals who are Hard of Hearing/Deaf or uses hearing aids. 

2 AAC 90.440 (g)

3 Automatic Transmission Only Applicant may only operate a non-commercial vehicle with an automatic transmission. Used when an Applicant is unable to operate a manual transmission vehicle safely due to a disability or impairment issued after the results of a road examination medical evaluation. 
4 Daylight Driving Only Applicant may only operate a vehicle during daylight hours

A physician or eye specialist has determined the applicant cannot see well enough during hours of darkness to drive safely after a medical examination. 2 AAC 90.440(d) 

5 Special Equipment Required Special equipment is required during operation of a motor vehicle

Added when disabilities or impairments require a piece of special equipment to operate a vehicle safely as determined by a medical evaluation or reexamination. Details of the restriction are detailed on the driver's electronic record. 

(hand control accelerator, steering knobs, etc.)
6 Off-Highway Communities Only

Applicant may only operate a vehicle in an area designated as an "Off-Highway" community but may not operate a motor vehicle outside this state. 

A License with this restriction acts as an Instruction Permit in all other areas in Alaska. 2 AAC 90.220(b)
Restriction is issued when an applicant applies for a waiver of the requirement to complete a road skills test in a non-commercial vehicle. Applicable only to residents of a community meeting the definition in AS 28.10.011(10) and AS 28.22.011(a)(1) where the average daily traffic volume is 499 or less. 
A Provisional Driver No Passenger Restriction

May not drive with passengers in the vehicle unless that Passenger is a Parent/Legal Guardian, Sibling, or an individual over the age of 21.

Must be applied to any Provisional Driver License issued (D/M1/M3). Provisional Licenses are required for a minimum of 6 months to any driver that is under the age of 18. It may be removed with parents permission after 6 months of violation free driving with the restriction.
B Provisional Driving Hours of Operation May not drive a motor vehicle between the hours of 1AM and 5AM unless driving to or from place of employment by the most direct route or as part of the duties of employment or is accompanied by a passenger over 21 licensed to drive the same class of vehicle.   Must be applied to any Provisional Driver License issued (D/M1/M3). Provisional Licenses are required for a minimum of 6 months to any driver that is under the age of 18. It may be removed with parents permission after 6 months of violation free driving with the restriction.
C Ignition Interlock Device May only Drive a Vehicle with an installed and functioning

Ignition Interlock Device.

Restriction is added to any license for an individual that has been convicted of an Driving Under the Influence once they regain the privilege to drive. The length of the restriction is based on previous convictions of the offense. The restriction is also required for limited license driving privileges after a revocation or suspension. 
J Alcohol Purchase or Consumption Prohibited A person who is 21 years of age or older may not purchase or consume alcohol.      Added to a license and Identification card if the person has been ordered to refrain from consuming alcoholic beverages under AS 12.55.015(a)(13) or as part of a sentence for conviction of a crime under AS 28.35.030, 28.35.032, or a similar municipal ordinance, as a condition of probation or parole from a conviction under AS 28.35.030, 28.35.032, or a similar municipal ordinance, or as a condition of probation or parole for any other crime. The restriction may also be self imposed by making a written affidavit during the application for a license or ID card. The length of the restriction is based on the court judgement unless self imposed.
W Operate 3-Wheeled Motorcycles Only May only operate 3-wheeled motorcycles or motor driven cycles of any engine size. Required on any M3 license issued.
