Renewal FAQ

If you are over 22 years old

  • Your personal information has not changed
  • You did not renew your driver license by mail at your last renewal

We encourage you to renew online.

If you are less than 18, please see about either your instruction permit or your provisional license.

If you are turning 21, your license will expire 90 days after your birthday and you will need to renew your license AFTER your 21st birthday. Your new license will switch to a horizontal format instead of vertical and will no longer have age related restrictions. To obtain the new license you must take an alcohol awareness test at your local DMV office.

If you're out of state upon turning 21, you must complete the Alcohol Awareness test to renew your license online. You may take the test online at https://k2do-ak.iti4dmv.com/at-home/Welcome.

After taking the test, please inform us by sending an email to doa.dmv.ads@alaska.gov, so we can update your record accordingly.

Once we inform you that your test completion has been recorded, you will be eligible to renew your license online here.

**Remember, online renewal is only available after your 21st birthday!

You may renew your license through the mail, please read the renewal section of our Guide to Rural Driving Information.

Help! I’m out of state and I am not eligible to renew my license online. What do I do?

If out of state and not eligible to renew your license online you can apply for a license extension letter online.

A commercial driver license cannot be extended more than 30 days beyond the license expiring and no extension is available for licenses expired over 1 year.

We are here to assist you. Feel free to reach out.
