IGNITION INTERLOCK INFORMATION

An Ignition Interlock Device (IID) is a breathalyzer for an individual's vehicle. It requires the driver to blow into a mouthpiece on the device before starting the vehicle. If the device detects a breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) above a pre-set limit, which is typically very low, the vehicle will not start. In Alaska, as in many other jurisdictions, IIDs are used as a measure to prevent individuals who have been convicted of DUI (Driving Under the Influence) offenses from operating a vehicle while impaired.  The IID requirement for a driver is represented by a "C" restriction on a license.

An ignition interlock device (IID) is usually required in two circumstances:

  • Limited License purposes
  • Following a DUI/Refusal conviction, per court judgment

When do you install an IID?

Limited license application:

  • Wait until after you apply for a limited license AND ARE APPROVED. The DMV will notify you of the next steps which will include having an IID installed.
  • Only install the device just before you submit the final documents for the limited license. The DMV will only accept installation paperwork dated within the last 30 days.

Following a DUI/Refusal conviction, per court judgment:

  • This is different than the initial administrative revocation. IIDs are only ordered by a court judgment and are for a specified period of time.
  • Only install the device just before you submit the final documents for reinstatement. The DMV will only accept installation paperwork dated within the last 30 days.
  • Reinstatement may include passing the general knowledge test, vision test, completing ASAP requirements, and acquiring SR22, and will have reinstatement fees. Therefore, only have the IID installed around the time you complete these things and are ready to reinstate. This will be the most cost-effective, least impactful way to meet this requirement.
