LIMITED LICENSE

How can I obtain a limited license?

When applying for a limited license following a DUI incident or due to a mandatory insurance suspension, it's crucial to select the appropriate application form based on your specific situation. Please note that limited licenses are not issued for situations involving commercial vehicle operation, cancellation of driving privileges, or refusal to submit to a chemical test.

To apply for a limited license, you must:

  1. Accurately complete all sections of the relevant application form.
  2. Submit the application along with a non-refundable processing fee of $100.

Ensure you follow these steps carefully to facilitate the processing of your application.

If you have further questions regarding limited licenses please email DOA.DMV.LIMITED@ALASKA.GOV.

Wait my case was dismissed.

If your Misdemeanor DUI/Refusal was dismissed in court you may not need a limited license. Request an administrative review to have the admin per se action removed. Complete form 405 and email it with the dismissal judgment to doa.dmv.hearings@alaska.gov. There is no fee and you will receive a response in approximately 10 business days.

I still need to drive to work while my case is processing through court.

Limited licenses are available after the first 30 days for the first offense and 90 days for subsequent offenses and you will be required to obtain an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) just prior to issuance of the limited license.  There are several steps to the application process.

Steps to a limited license:

    1. Email the misdemeanor limited license application to doa.dmv.limited@alaska.gov. We will email you an electronic invoice that may paid online for the $100 application fee.
    2. The DMV will then review your record and application. If approved, we will mail you an individualized list of requirements for the limited license, based on your driving history. These will include:
      • Completion of Form D1 Application for Driver’s license
      • Pass the vision test
        • Vision test may be taken for free at a local DMV or you may submit a vision test form
      • Pass the general knowledge test
        • The test may be taken for free at a local Alaska DMV, OR
        • The test may be taken online for a fee
        • Practice the test first here: practice test online
      • Provide an ‘In Compliance’ or ‘Completed’ letter from the ASAP office. You can contact the Anchorage ASAP office for further information, (907)264-0735.
      • Schedule and pass a road test, if applicable
        • If you have not had a valid driver’s license in the last 5 years. The road test must be taken at an Alaska DMV office, where available.  A $15 fee applies.
        • Road test must be taken in a vehicle with IID installed.
      • Within 30 days of submitting these requirements, acquire Financial Responsibility Filing (SR 22 insurance form) for Alaska dated in the last 30 days, contact your insurance company.
      • Within 30 days of submitting these requirements, install an ignition interlock device (IID) on every vehicle you will be driving, contact Interlock installers
      • All holds on your driving privileges in state or out-of-state must be resolved

All limited licenses are issued by the Anchorage Driver Services office. Your local DMV office can provide assistance with documenting the vision, knowledge and road test requirements, but cannot issue the limited license. Once you have met all requirements the remaining documents requested by the DMV may be submitted electronically to doa.dmv.limited@alaska.gov. Note: Submitting your limited license application does not equate to valid driving privileges.  Do not drive until you receive the limited license from DMV.

The DMV will mail you the limited license.  Once you receive the limited license, you are authorized to operate a non-commercial motor vehicle that has an ignition interlock device installed through the expiration date on the license as long as the limited license is in your possession while driving and your driving privileges remain valid.
