CONFIDENTIALITY OF MOTOR VEHICLE RECORDS

The release of vehicle records is restricted by state and federal law. The personal information is integrated into the vehicle record so the record cannot be released unless the person, business, or organization requesting the record qualifies under one of the authorized exceptions.

Submit your research request here through my.alaska.gov DMV Online Services.

Be sure to include the email address so that we may email you an electronic invoice for the fee which is as follows (per 2 AAC 92.200):

Paper $10
Electronic $5
Vehicle registration list $50 minimum fee for first 1,000 records, and an additional five cents for each record after the first 1,000 records.

For purposes of the law "personal information" includes name and both mailing and residence addresses of any individual on the record. The definition of "individual" includes a person, an organization, or an entity. This is broad enough to include people, businesses, trusts, organizations, and lienholders if the lienholder is an individual. If the lienholder is a business or institution, the release is not required.

Records can only be released for authorized use as allowed under the law. This includes a computer printout and any copies of documents retained in the microfilm files if requested. You would declare:

  • I am the owner of record of this vehicle.
  • I am the manufacturer of this vehicle, supporting documentation required.
  • I have the written permission of the owner(s) or lienholder, supporting documentation required.
  • I am an agent, employee, or contractor of a legitimate business, supporting documentation required.
  • To use in connection with a civil, criminal, administrative or arbitration.
  • I am agent, employee or contractor for an insurer, or insurance support agency.
  • To use to provide notice to owners of a towed or impounded vehicle
  • To use to provide notice to owners of an abandoned vehicle.

A record may be released to the owner listed on that record and any record may be released to any local, state, or federal government agency.
