DISABILITY PARKING PERMITS & PLATES
If you are a driver with a disability, you can apply for a special permit and/or a license plate that will allow you to park closer to buildings.
Requirements
To obtain a disability parking permit or plate, you must meet one of the following requirements:
- Cannot walk 200 feet without stopping
- Cannot walk safely without using a brace, cane, crutch, another person, prosthetic device, wheelchair, or other assistive device.
- Are restricted by lung disease
- Use portable oxygen
- Have a cardiac condition classified by Class III or Class IV according to the standards set by the American Heart Association
- Are severely limited in your ability to walk due to an arthritic, neurological, or orthopedic condition
How do I get a disability parking permit?
Take the Special Disability Parking Permit (form 861) to a qualified health practitioner who will complete and sign the form. The doctor or you may submit the completed form to the DMV by email. We will review and mail you the permit within 1 week.
Disability Parking Permit FAQs
There is no charge for a permit.
The expiration date of your permit is determined on the application filled out by your health practitioner.
For a permanent disability, your permit is good for 5 years, counting the year it's issued. It may be renewed online every five years. You are also eligible to apply for disability license plates with parking privileges.
For a temporary disability, you may obtain a permit for up to 6 months.
The permit will list the expiration date.
No. However, you may want to have one if:

- Transportation is provided by an individual whose vehicle is not equipped with disability plates.
- A parking permit may be required if you are utilizing a rental vehicle.
- Alternative transportation methods are being employed while your own vehicle is undergoing repairs.

How do I get disability plates?
There are 3 types of disability plates:

Additionally, you may need to complete and bring the following documents:
- Instead of the 861 form, inform us that you have a disability on record, the plate number of a disability plate you have currently or in the past, or provide the disability permit number
- For veteran disability plate, submit notice from Veteran's Affairs (VA) stating you have a combined service-related disability rating of 50% or more
- For the veteran disability plate with parking privilege, you will need to submit the 861 form AND the VA notice of combined service-related disability rating of 50% or more
Having a permanent disability allows a registered owner to have 1 free registration. This exemption is transferrable to another vehicle.
You can choose to have a disability plate on any of your vehicles. You get one vehicle registration for free, but if you want disability plates on more vehicles, you'll need to pay the usual fees for each additional one.
