Dual Registration

Commercial vehicle operators in Alaska may need dual vehicle registration under certain circumstances.
Dual registration means that a commercial vehicle is officially registered in two different jurisdictions at the same time.

This may be required when a vehicle operates across state or international borders and must comply with the registration laws of more than one jurisdiction. Vehicles registered in Alaska for dual purposes are required to pay full Alaska registration fees, but a title change is not necessary.

Important Notes

  • The State of Alaska does not participate in the International Registration Plan (IRP).
Commercial carriers that travel between Alaska and other jurisdictions must therefore obtain dual registration or obtain a Commercial Trip Permit (TRT).

  • Proof of Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) payment is required for qualifying vehicles (55,000 lbs. gross weight or more). See more information on HVUT here.

  • All carriers must maintain compliance with the Performance and Registration Information Systems Management (PRISM) program, including a valid USDOT number and current MCS-150 registration if applicable.
