You can begin renewing your vehicle registration up to 3 months before it expires. All registrations expire on the last day of the month. A reminder postcard will be mailed about 2 months before your expiration date.

About Expiration Dates
When a vehicle is first registered in Alaska, it is assigned a permanent renewal month, which stays the same even if the vehicle is sold. If the registration has been expired less than one year, you must pay the full two‑year fee, starting from the month it originally expired. This applies even if you recently purchased the vehicle or if it was not driven during the lapse. If the registration has been expired more than one year, or if the previous owner did not pay registration fees, the registration cycle will reset and a new expiration month will be assigned.
