About Expiration Dates

When you first register a vehicle in Alaska, it gets a specific month when it needs to be renewed, and this month stays the same even if the vehicle gets a new owner.

If the vehicle's registration has been expired for less than a year, you'll need to pay the full fee for two years starting from the month it expired. This applies even if you've just bought the vehicle and it was the previous owner who let the registration expire, or if the vehicle wasn't used during that time.

If the registration has expired for more than a year, or if the last owner didn't have to pay registration fees then the registration process starts anew.
