Trip Permit
It is unlawful to drive a vehicle on public roadways without a current registration, and license plates with month/year tabs. However, you can get a trip permit for one of the following types of moves:
- Transporting a non-completed vehicle under construction.
- inspecting, weighing, or meeting other requirements of the Division.
Rebuilding, dismantling, or removing the vehicle permanently from the highways, vehicular ways, and areas of the state. - Transporting an unladen non-commercial vehicle on a single trip by a noncircular route. Valid up to 20 days. (Maximum of 3 per vehicle.)
- Transporting an unladen commercial vehicle making a single continuous trip by a noncircular route. Valid up to 10 days.
- Obtaining an emission inspection for a vehicle with an expired registration. Valid up to 5 days.
To arrange a one-time trip permit, apply at a local DMV Office. Be prepared to provide proof of vehicle interest or ownership. The fee is $5.
