Bringing Mobile DMV to Rural Alaska

The Alaska DMV is committed to ensuring that all communities, including those in remote areas, have access to essential services. Through the Mobile DMV Program, we work with rural communities across the state to provide road tests, credential processing, and REAL ID services.

We appreciate the opportunity to visit communities and assist residents with their licensing and identification needs. Whether issuing a first driver’s license, renewing credentials, or helping individuals meet REAL ID requirements, we strive to provide reliable and accessible services for all Alaskans.

Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your community. We look forward to the journey ahead!

What can you do to have a successful visit?

Since time is of the essence, the best thing to do is BE PREPARED!

Bringing the DMV to Your Community

If your community is interested in having the Mobile DMV visit, there are a few key requirements that must be met in planning a trip.

The first step is for the community to identify a Document Pre-screening Partner, someone from your community who can determine how many residents are in need and ensure they are prepared for REAL ID issuance by verifying they have the necessary documents. To make this easier, you can print a REAL ID Checklist here:

Community Responsibilities

In addition to a Document Pre-screening Partner, the community or organization would also be responsible for:

  • Round-trip airline reservations including luggage costs. *Please note state employee travel will be booked by the Division using State travel policy and procedures and the Division will send an invoice to the community for payment once booked.
  • Any Division material that cannot be brought onto the aircraft as a carry-on will need to be checked and properly secured during travel.
  • Reserving and paying for hotel accommodation. If a hotel is not available a suitable alternative should be provided.
  • Transportation expenses, including, but not limited to rental cars, airport parking, and taxi fares.
  • Per diem of traveling employee.
  • Securing a facility with an internet connection to process REAL ID transactions. We also ask that a designated Wi-Fi and password be available for DMV services and the local IT information be provided for assistance if issues arise.
  • Storing any Division material or equipment that is sent in advance in a secure, temperature-controlled environment. The materials are fragile, and the organization will bear any loss or damage to the equipment.

Once we arrive, we ask that a point of contact be on site to help with translation, ensure everyone has their documents ready, and assist or redirect anyone who has completed the prescreening process. We can certainly modify our approach to accommodate the community’s needs, as long as the adjustments are reasonable.

Please reach out to our Connection Coordinator to collaborate. We look forward to working with you in the future!

Already REAL ID Compliant? Check Your Documents!

Not everyone needs to upgrade to a REAL ID driver’s license—some documents are already REAL ID compliant and can be used for identity verification when traveling or accessing federal facilities.

A complete list of accepted identification can be found at TSA.gov, but the four most common forms of ID that Alaskans can use include:

  • Passports or Passport Cards
  • An acceptable photo ID issued by a federally recognized Tribal Nation/Indian Tribe, including Enhanced Tribal Cards (ETCs).
  • Military IDs
  • REAL ID Identification Cards or Driver’s Licenses

If you already have one of these documents, you may already have a REAL ID! However, if you want the convenience of using your Alaska driver’s license for travel and federal access, upgrading to a REAL ID is a great option.

Check your documents today to see if you’re already covered!
