License Plates

When you register a vehicle for the first time in Alaska, your standard license plate and registration tabs are included in the registration fee.

You may order a personalized plate online.
A plate must be off a vehicle or expired for more than 60 days to become available for someone else to request.

If someone is releasing a plate to you, they must complete and sign Form 814.

If your plate type requires proof or supporting documentation, submit Form 803 and required documents online, visit a DMV office, or mail them.

If a standard issue plate is lost or damaged, apply for duplicate plates or tabs.

If a personalized plate is lost or damaged, submit an online application and pay the initial plate fee for a replacement.

Sample license plates (not valid for driving) may be purchased for $10 and are commonly used for collections, displays, or school projects.

The DMV will not issue personalized plates containing vulgar, demeaning, violent, or criminal references, per 2 AAC 92.120.

The DMV will review the plate and recall it if necessary.

A plate must be assigned to you, and you must be a registered owner of the vehicle receiving the plate. Standard issue plates are not transferable.

Transferring a Plate (Vehicle Already in Your Name)

To transfer a plate when you are the titled owner, email doa.dmv.webmaster@alaska.gov with:

1. A completed Vehicle Transaction Application that includes a note requesting the plate transfer and listing the complete plate number.
2. Payment of the $5 transfer fee, if required.

Transferring a Plate to a Recently Purchased Vehicle

Follow the new vehicle title process and include:

1. A Vehicle Transaction Application stating that you want to transfer your plate to the newly purchased vehicle.
2. Add $5 to your transaction payment.

No Transfer Fee Applies to These Plate Types:

• Disabled Veteran
• Disability (Standard)
• Gold Star Family
• Prisoner of War
• Pearl Harbor Survivor
