How many plates must be displayed?

ONE PLATE:    Alaska law requires you to display one license plate on the back of all passenger vehicles, motorcycles, motorhomes, trucks, vans, trailers, and APV’s. For Commercial vehicles that weigh over 10,001 pounds the plate is required to be displayed on the front of the vehicle. A month and year tab must be displayed on the plate.

How do I get a regular plate?

How do I get a personalized plate?

If a plate was previously registered it must be off a vehicle or expired for over one year to become available to order. To get a plate from someone prior to that, they must provide you with a signed 814 form to release it to you.

If your plate requires supporting documentation, please submit form 803 and documents here, visit a local DMV, or mail them to us.

What if my plate was lost or damaged?

If one or more of your standard plates has been lost or damaged, please apply for duplicate plates or tabs. If your personalized plate has been lost or damaged, please Submit Application Online for cost of initial price (see below).

How do I get a SAMPLE plate?

We do not sell used license plates; however, for $10.00 you can select from four plate styles and add to your collection or for a school project. Click below to go to the sample license plates page: Buy a sample plate.

How do I report an offensive plate?

DMV will not issue personalized plates that display symbols in a combination that is demeaning towards a group of people, or that is otherwise a vulgar, violent, or criminal reference or term per 2 AAC 92.120. If you believe a license plate has been issued that conflicts with this regulation, please email us at doa.dmv.webmaster@alaska.gov and DMV will immediately investigate the license plate and if necessary, recall the license plate.

TRANSFERRING PLATES

In order to transfer license plates from one vehicle to another, the plate must be assigned to you and you must be a registered owner of the vehicle it's going to.

Standard issue plates are non transferable.

How do I transfer my plates?

The vehicle is in my name

You may email doa.dmv.webmaster@alaska.gov the following:

1. On the Vehicle Transaction Application Form V1 make a statement in the comments section that you wish to transfer your plate, and specify the complete, correct plate number.
2. Fee - we can email you an invoice for the $5.00, if applicable (see below)

Just bought a vehicle (not yet titled in my name)

Follow the procedures for new vehicle title here: 

1. On the Vehicle Transaction Application Form V1 make a statement in the comments section that you wish to transfer your plate, and specify the complete, correct plate number.
2. Fee - Add on $5.00 to the cost of your transaction. Payment may be made by check or money order.

There is no fee for the following types of plates:

• Disabled Veteran
• Disability - standard
• Gold Star Family
• Prisoner of War
• Pearl Harbor Survivor
