MANDATORY INSURANCE
The Mandatory Insurance Statutes mandate that individuals owning a motor vehicle subject to registration must maintain a liability insurance policy in accordance with Alaska Statute 28.22.101.
The policy must meet the following minimum requirements:
- $50,000/$100,000 for bodily injury or death
- $25,000 for property damage
Proof of motor vehicle liability insurance must be carried by the individual at all times while operating a motor vehicle. They are required to present this proof for inspection upon request by a peace officer or other authorized representative of the Department of Public Safety. Proof can be in either paper or digital format.
Consequences
Failure to maintain the required insurance may lead to the suspension of your driver's license.
In the Municipality of Anchorage, if you are unable to provide proof of insurance, your vehicle may be impounded. In such instances, you would need to reach out to the Anchorage Police Department to learn about the procedures for retrieving your vehicle.
Exceptions
In areas where vehicle registration is not mandatory, insurance is also not required. However, drivers who have received a ticket for a violation totaling 6 points or more within the past 5 years must obtain liability insurance.
