Title Issued in Error (Incorrect VIN or Vehicle Data)
If your Alaska vehicle title was issued with an incorrect Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or other inaccurate vehicle data, it is important to correct the error so that the title accurately reflects your vehicle and ownership.
When a Vehicle Inspection, Appraisal, and Bond Are Required
If the ownership documents you presented (such as a Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin, out-of-state title, or bill of sale) do not reflect the error, then additional steps are required to confirm and secure your vehicle information:
-
Physical Vehicle Inspection – DMV staff or another authorized agent must inspect the vehicle to verify the correct VIN and other identifying details. See inspection form for more details.
-
Fair Market Value Appraisal – An appraisal establishes the current market value of the vehicle, which is used to determine the bond amount. Appraisals must be completed by a licensed dealer, appraiser, or other DMV-approved entity. See appraisal form for more details.
-
Surety Bond – A bond is required to protect against potential ownership disputes and must be purchased for the amount based on the fair market value of the vehicle. See surety bond form for more details.
When the error is due to an Alaska DMV error
If the incorrect VIN or data was the result of a DMV error reflected in department records, then the correction process is simpler:
-
The customer must surrender the previously issued title and registration.
-
No vehicle inspection, appraisal, or surety bond is required.
Lienholder Involvement
In either scenario, if there is an active lien, the lienholder must provide the DMV with the title.
-
If the vehicle has been paid off but a lien is still recorded, the DMV requires either:
-
the title showing the lien released, or
-
a completed Form 809 (Affidavit of Lien Release) along with a lien release letter from the lienholder.
-
How to Begin the Correction Process
-
Contact your local DMV office to explain the situation and determine which scenario applies to you.
-
Gather all required documents, including the existing title, registration, lien release (if applicable), and your appraisal, bond, or inspection paperwork if needed.
-
Submit the documents to the DMV for review.
-
Once approved, a corrected title will be issued reflecting the accurate VIN and vehicle information.
Note: Accurate vehicle records are essential for ownership, registration, and resale. The DMV correction process ensures that errors are resolved properly and securely, protecting both vehicle owners and the public.
